WoF Veld and Forest Fire Fighters from across the province will be participating in this camp, where they will be re assessed on their fitness levels and also attend the fire lectures. Part of the activities include running the 2,4km race, doing push ups and sit ups in limited time and also walking the 10km distance to endure the hard terrain. They also go through the live fire where they are trained to survive if surrounded by fire while on duty. The purpose of the yellow card training camp is to prepare the fire fighters to go to the fire line and to ensure that they are ready for the fire season.

WATER SUPPLY DIFFICULTIES AS ON 23 FEBRUARY 2015:

Most reservoirs have been low and some almost empty in the past few days. This contributes to water shortages in high laying areas. The situation got worse on Sunday with some dried up. Areas most affected are Flora Park, Serala View, Thornhill and some parts of Sterpark and Bendor and Seshego as well.

Lepelle Northern Water indicate that load shedding is contributing to low reservoir levels because they have to stop pumps for two or more hours. The municipality engaged with Eskom not to implement shedding that will affect all the sources at the same time. Lepelle has promised to open two pumps after storing more water and to reduce flow to other areas so that we can have more. As a result, the municipality cannot say for how long this will continue because load shedding is a major contributor. However, we are hopeful that our engagement with the supplier and Eskom will bear positive results.

The municipality will continue to explore means and partnerships that will help provide sufficient water supply to the city. In the interim, water tankers will continue to be provided to areas that are affected.

Residents, businesses and visitors should always bear in mind that Polokwane is a water scarce area. We should adopt water conserving habits even during periods of water abundance.

For more info on water tankers, please contact the municipality’s water and sanitation section on 015 290 2376.

The 2014 fire season has been the busiest one for the WoF teams. More than 200 fires have been suppressed since the 1st June 2014 to date, with Blouberg Municipality being high on the rank with more than 70 fires. WoF is pleading with the communities to refrain from lighting fires as this could result in those fires getting out of control.
